Laura, yet again you write exquisitely about what's happening in Iowa and to Iowans. And, in this case, how it will impact all of us everywhere. Thank you for your important work.

Thank you for reading!

Laura, have you seen Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to Ashley Hinson’s post?

Ha ha, I had not seen this!

Laura, your reporting gives me substantial data to digest. Hinson has always read "phony" to me, and yet I feel guilty judging a woman. That Trump emphasizes wife and mother in his endorsement -- drooling over her -- is a visceral gag reflex. Your reporting of her lack of courage is especially telling. Model leaders for me are Hillary, Princess Diana, and the WNBA basketball players. Their intelligence and determination despite the "burden" of being a woman are what I look for in leaders. I support women, but I want women to challenge the status quo, not degrade and crush those of us who need support, guidance, inspiration, and understanding. Hinson's allegiance to Trump is thoroughly disgusting.

All strategy by MAGA world which is not really the Republican party. Ernst and Hinson aligned their strategies after much reflection and prayer. Joni will be in the wings awaiting a new job and if Ashley wins she hopes to be a Senator for life. Iowa deserves better than Hinson.

Iowa has to do better. There are better candidates out there. Her record is dismal and maybe I'm remembering wrong but didn't she barely win the seat she holds in the first place. I'm sure Tump likes her. He seems to have a thing about simpering blonde bimbos.

Mariannette Miller-Meeks won her first Congressional race by six votes out of 394,000 ballots cast.

I was a little perplexed that Hinson made such a definitive statement on the deportation of the 20 year old West Liberty man Pascual Pedro. I now wonder if the Republican machinery behind her campaign and Ernst getting out wasn't already in the works. Your excellent reporting certainly connects some dots that maybe Hinson getting in isn't because Ernst got out, but the other way around. Ernst got out so Hinson could get in. And all of this being orchestrated by the MAGA elites outside of Iowa. https://www.radioiowa.com/2025/07/10/congresswoman-hinson-says-deported-west-liberty-man-was-given-due-process/

Ernst has been on retirement watch for months. She presumably communicated her decision to Hinson long before it became public knowledge.

I totally agree with the premise that Ernst dipped out so Hinson could get in. Ernst will land on some board somewhere and be just fine. Meanwhile, Senator Hinson, which I fully expect cuz…well….this is Iowa…, will drag us deeper into the Trump Darkness. Smirking and patting her back the whole way while vying to land on the 2028 ticket as a shining rising star of Christo-Nationalism.

Excellent reporting as always, Laura!

Have you written any posts in the past about your feelings or research regarding fair elections, particularly in 2026 and beyond? This may be a bigger question for the presidential race in 2028. Send me any links to past posts if you have some. Thanks again. Great stuff!

Hey Hinson, what about the Farm Bill, 707 days overdue? Given tRump's fight with China, they are buying no soybeans from this year's great harvest. None. Zilch. Nada. And 50% of Iowans support him, Hinson hugging hard? How ridiculous. Finally, Ernst and Grassley, as well as three congressman on Farm Bill and have done nothing? The MAGA clown show ? Bye bye.

Again, as most readers of your post have in common is a thirst for straight information and candid observations. Thankyou Laura for your hard work. Tom Nichols had a great piece in the Atlantic Magazine the other day describing the tactics good and not so good people use in dealing with Trump's ego. Pouring praise upon praise to any human being sours my soul.

Hinson is a lot like Nunn. It’s like grabbing smoke with those two. Never overly offensive but I’m not sure they get anything done.

Laura Belin's avatar

She has much better political skills than Nunn. He’s never even held a town hall.

It’s interesting and not surprising that Trump, in his endorsement of Hinson, illustrates that he does not seem to know that US reps are elected every two years, not every four years.

I don't understand how anyone with a conscience will justify voting against releasing the Epstein files, but you know she will. If it's the Democratic hoax they claim, then lay the cards on the table.
