August 22 edition of KHOI's "Capitol Week" is online
Trump search, Pence visit, Iowa State Fair news and more
Welcome to new subscribers! More than 270 of you now receive this Substack newsletter. When the list hits 300, I will post another “Ask me anything about Iowa politics” discussion thread.
My main work is covering Iowa politics for Bleeding Heartland, but since February 2021, I’ve had a side gig as the statehouse reporter for KHOI Community Radio in Ames.
Every Monday, Dennis Hart and I discuss the latest Iowa political happenings for “Capitol Week”, which airs live from 7:00 to 7:30 pm Central on Mondays. KHOI rebroadcasts the show on Wednesdays at noon, and producer Mike Murphy uploads the audio files, so anyone can listen to any of the 70+ shows we’ve recorded anytime on the station’s website.
In this week’s edition (here’s the link to the audio file), Dennis and I discussed:
The latest news related to the FBI search of Donald Trump’s Florida residence, including a new court filing from Trump’s attorneys and comments from Senator Chuck Grassley;
Former Vice President Mike Pence’s latest Iowa visit and prospects in a Republican presidential campaign;
Most GOP elected officials avoiding the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox, a topic I covered in more depth at Bleeding Heartland;
Governor Kim Reynolds using public funds for an Iowa State Fair booth plastered with her name and image, in apparent violation of the “self-promotion” law’s spirit;
Libertarian Rick Stewart’s strange ask for Democrats to contribute funds to his campaign for governor;
Why U.S. Representative Cindy Axne is highlighting the abortion issue in her latest television commercial targeting GOP challenger Zach Nunn;
Whether the Democratic National Committee’s delayed decision on the 2024 presidential calendar is hurting Iowa Democrats before this year’s election;
News related to Summit Carbon Solutions’ quest to build a carbon dioxide pipeline across Iowa;
What’s been happening with COVID-19 hospitalization numbers in Iowa;
The state of Iowa’s new call center for monkeypox questions.
The link to the whole 30-minute program is here. You can listen to this week’s show and any past editions of “Capitol Week” at your convenience on KHOI’s website.
