August 8 edition of KHOI's "Capitol Week" is online
Abortion politics and the Inflation Reduction Act
For the past year and a half, Dennis Hart and I have discussed Iowa politics for 30 minutes on Monday evenings, starting at 7:00 pm. KHOI Community Radio broadcasts the show live and runs it again at noon on Wednesdays. But as with any podcast, you can listen to the show online, anytime that’s convenient for you.
Most weeks Dennis and I discuss lots of topics, including many I didn’t have time to write about at Bleeding Heartland. Ground we covered this evening:
The Kansas referendum on an abortion amendment to the state constitution, and the takeaways for Iowa
Planned Parenthood and the ACLU of Iowa dropping their legal challenge to the 24-hour abortion waiting period
How abortion may affect the 2022 campaigns
Preliminary numbers on abortions performed in Iowa during 2021
President Biden’s executive order related to protecting abortion rights
My reporting on the possibility that the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board will clarify whether state law on attribution statements for election advocacy apply to some political text messages
Several angles related to the U.S. Senate’s vote on the Inflation Reduction Act (insulin copay caps, climate change and tax provisions)
U.S. Senate passage of the bill expanding benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits during overseas service
Prospects for a federal bill updating the Electoral College Act
The link to the whole 30-minute program is here. You can listen to this week’s show and any past editions of “Capitol Week” at your convenience on KHOI’s website.
By the way, KHOI is celebrating its tenth anniversary on the air. The station broadcasts a wide variety of music and talk programming (here’s the schedule). All of it is available for free with no commercials, since it’s a community radio station. If you’re a member of Iowa Public Radio, I hope you will consider becoming a member of KHOI as well.
Capitol Week is a great show! Thanks for doing it.
