In obtuse retaliatory form the Republican Party of Iowa blames the DMPS for “hiring a criminal illegal alien”. Talking about toning down the rhetoric while the leaders themselves attack, blame and create division and conveniently forget that they themselves have placed a 34 times indicted criminal into the WH.
I will wait until we have all the information to try to understand what happened, but a couple of things are obvious. Dr. Roberts was beloved as a leader and helping DMPS make strides in the education of our children and youth. This is a personal tragedy.
The other obvious thing is that some of our elected representatives are using this moment for political gain. Their accusations toward the school board are insidious and malevolent. I applaud Jackie Norris and the Board for their honest explanation and quick response, and for calling out the despicable rhetoric.
Am very sympathetic towards Dr. Roberts' plight, and ICE has proven they routinely distort or make up facts. That said, the purported existence of a final removal order from 2024 does not seem to track with Roberts claiming to be a US citizen. I also note that I'm not hearing his attorney demanding his release for false imprisonment due to his US citizenship.
Assuming that the removal order is legit and Dr Roberts is not a US citizen, nor has legal immigration status, in a less overheated political environment I'd hope the authorities could find a basis to parole him, or a path for him to get status. But that's not the world we're living in...

The true tragedy here is that a highly qualified school superintendent, a Black man, has been targeted by a criminal operation (ICE) led by a 34-times indicted criminal who currently sits in the White House.
I am very saddened to hear of Dr Roberts sudden detainement from ICE and to hear the accusations against him. Personally speaking I don't feel as though their information pertaining to Dr Roberts is correct. I don't know Dr Roberts Personally, but from his listed background of being a school superintendent in different states for 20 years, I'd say that merits some indication that he is a legal citizen of this country and his attorney should by now be seeking to have him released from custody on the grounds of illegal detainement.
However, I personally know Mr. Perish is the best criminal defendant attorney in Des Moines, and he said he talked to his client, but also he never stated any sudden move to have him released from custody. Also that there was no public statements made by his attorneys office other than him speaking to Dr Roberts on the 27th.
My prayers are on Dr Roberts release from ICE custody, and a safe return home where he can go back to his job as superintendent.
I am especially appreciative of the professional way Board Chair, Jackie Norris, has handled this difficult situation. I read in the IA Capitol Dispatch that Chair Norris asked us to provide radical empathy, the same radical empathy that the DMPS system, under Dr. Roberts and the Board, have been leading our DMPS system. I, for one, urge everyone to take Chair Norris's lead, and practice radical empathy for everyone who is involved with this issue. Let us all take a deep breath and support Dr. Roberts, his legal team, our DMPS board, all the staff and teachers in the DSM system, and all the children who will be affected as we move into making our decision about the very important bond referendum which is on the November 4th ballot. Our DMPS is for us. Let us be for them just as strongly.
As batshit as 45 most certainly was, for the most part, the institutions held together. This time around, sorry, we are now in full Oceania mode, so I'm having an incredibly difficult time believing anything coming out of this administration. Literally nothing adds up here, and they're trying to see how much they can get away with.
It’s painfully obvious the board wanted to nominate a minority to lead the district. That Roberts is an immigrant really turned on the South of Grand liberals. Only if Roberts were gay or transgender could it have been better for them.
This was a DEI hire and it’s blown up in the lefts face. Roberts fled from law enforcement while in position of a gun and a wad of cash. He got out of his vehicle and ran from them. This is who was hired to be a role model for kids.
Norris needs to drop her bid for the Senate. The board needs to be replaced with competent people concerned about the kids rather than feeling good about themselves.
