Dang Iowa, time to go Blue! Hey Grassley and the gang, how about that Farm Bill? You guys are gonna hit the 1,000 day mark pretty soon...incompetence on display!

Worth noting: Iowa Republicans have not hesitated to weaponize personal financial records against Democratic candidates — Deidre DeJear faced scrutiny over her small business finances in 2022, and historically, Iowa GOP (maybe D's too) regularly hammers candidates over personal fiscal management as a proxy for governing competence. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Four civil judgments, a foreclosure filing, and a possible criminal referral — and Lahn's defense is "routine refinancing"? The vetting failure here is the real story.

I don't know much about farm finances. How easy is it to refinance when a petition for foreclosure has already been filed?

Laura, I worked with farm groups in the past but on advocacy and nonprofit issues. I have no experience in financing. I was involved during the farm crisis with creation of the Iowa mediation service. A current or former employee should clarify a narrow window of opportunity for refinancing.

Thanks for your reporting on Derek Wulf's financial situation. In round numbers, he is being sued, in one form or another, by creditors for $936,505. These are not actions that happen real soon as a person quits paying . Normally a creditor tries to "work things out" with a debtor rather than involve the long and expensive process of foreclosing. So these financial problems have probably been going on for some time. His recent financial statements and tax returns would be revealing. Do candidates have to provide that type of information. Be interesting to see who will be providing the refinancing packaging. I urge you or the Sand folks to follow up on the story. It will tell us a lot.

Candidates do not have to provide their tax returns. The foreclosure filing from WCF Financial has a lot of the background and as you guessed, this has been unfolding for a long time. There are many supporting exhibits that indicate the creditor has been trying to work this out.

To an old retired lender, That does not speak well of Mr. Wulf's character. Choosing him doesn't speak well of Lahn's attention to detail. I'll double down on urging Sand to get on this story.

Glad to share it the next time I see you, Laura. I took a picture of the page the day it was published.

The fact that Nunn personally brought pressure to bear to dissuade a citizen from seeking to serve should, by itself be disqualifying.

I still carry a photograph of the full page Bayer immunity THANK YOU on my phone. The audacity of placing it before a vote, brings pressure (and $) to bear on elected officials. And, if we had an Attorney General who was impartial, should have been cause for investigation.

The ambivalence and disinterest exhibited by legacy media, are just the latest acts of cowardice and partisanship on their part. Normally, the treatment you’ve received would have been scandalous. Under these conditions, it doesn’t seem to even raise an eyebrow. That’s a scandal too.

I would like to see that photograph.

Curious Laura if your reporting alone resulted in a victory for a candidate, and only one, who would you chose?

Laura Belin's avatar

That is a difficult question. I don’t really know.

Mine would be Dave Dawson since he gets no love (money) from the party and an upset in IA-04 would be on national news. Plus, anyone who Trump endorses needs to be on the list of options. Rob Sand needs no help, he has a machine behind him.
