It's hardly surprising that suckup king Joe Mitchel would write such tripe. What's truly disturbing is that the once-great Des Moines Register would publish such propaganda. It's one thing to give space to conservative voices — it's another thing entirely to publish tripe with no value to add to the marketplace of ideas.

I had the same reaction. Of course they are going to publish conservative viewpoints but they should not let politicians lie in their newspaper. I fact check Bleeding Heartland guest submissions before publishing.

Agree that the Register should not be running his propaganda pieces. This falls on them. Mitchell’s falsehoods and rationalizations are worse than Greg Ganske’s.

I don’t mind them publishing his commentary but they need to correct factual errors.

When you graduate from Drake, you can become anything! Apparently, even a fascist. 🫡 How embarrassing for the rest of us.

It’s sad to me that a generation is growing up thinking this kind of Soviet type hero worship is normal.

My head and my heart hurt after reading about this DecidedlyEnabledIdolater.

Thanks for this story. Although I live in Indiana, we have much in common.

Ugh. As desirable as dog vomit. The editors should insert a note at the end with some qualifiers. I don't see the Iowa GOP adopting a reasonable, policy-based approach anytime soon. If we even get the chance, it will take years to heal from the devastation wrought by current state "leadership" and their ilk. Thanks for putting this out.

Thanks Laura - there are so many suck-ups to Trump the ozone layer is depleting faster than predicted. The backstory and camps within the Iowa GOP deserve to be exposed. Grateful you have such a focus on the Iowa Legislature cast of characters and actions.

I like writing about new jobs for former Iowa legislators. The background was more interesting than usual on this one.

Hi Laura. Thank you for this deep dive. Wow, ‘the future’ post truth is “so bright I have to wear shades…”(Timbuk 3 song reference). Just wow. The level of smug, conservative , schmoozing with ‘early riser’ dilettante attributes is remarkable. It’s as if you asked ChatGTP to spit out an Iowan GenZ Turning Point, (post )Truth Social superstar action figure. Keep an eye on that fellow, he would appear to be a ‘Pick me’ GOP ‘golden boy’ and he may be donning sunglasses at any moment.

LOL, he could almost have been invented by AI.

Trump's boasting of his environmental credentials echoes his 2016 acceptance speech at the Republican convention: "Nobody knows the system better than me. Which is why I alone can fix it."

Laura Belin's avatar

It's pretty impressive how many of these "Nobody knows more" clips the NowThis team were able to compile.

Great column.

Mitchell was not just “wrong”. He lied.

Laura Belin's avatar

Probably. But it's possible he doesn't know much about that topic and didn't bother to do any research before writing.

Thanks for the photo closing out your piece. To me, it shows a young man who sometime ago bade farewell to his soul.

I imagine that look is quite similar to ones on all the lost boys in the 1930s who suddenly found purpose in life upon joining the NSDAP.

Question to Mitchel: "Whatchu been smokin'?"

The biggest myth of Trump's presidency is that he created jobs. Jobs were created early on when he inherited Obama's economy, but Trump lost jobs during his presidency and left office with an unemployment rate of 6.4%. Trump lost more jobs than any modern president. And he has a great start at crashing the economy again. He is bleeding jobs and he knows it. He is already trying to fudge the numbers, blame the Fed and accuse the courts of crashing the economy by stopping his illegal tariffs. He doesn't take responsibility for anything and he knows his deficit, spending and tariff policies are going to cause economic collapse.
