How very very interesting. Bummer that I can't see the FaceBook posts. I deleted by account when Zuckerberg donated to Trump's inauguration and FB no longer lets me view any posts without an account. I don't mind being off social media. As far as I understand, the federal government is still collecting data on social media and email and voice and text messages that started in the George W. Bush administration. Big Brother is watching. I'll be sending my opinion to Gov Reynolds and Senator Ernst. They wouldn't be in their current position without women's "liberation" rights.

Great point. I'd love to see Barker tell Reynolds and Ernst that they are neglecting their Christian-wife duties and are in the grip of Satan. Especially Ernst. He should tell her to stop f**king military leaders and go back to her ex-husband.

Thanks for your observation here, and for quitting FB. I burned my scant-used site to the ground in '16 when I learned that Zuck, Inc. had 'sold their souls to the devil' allowing reactionary elements to micro-target susceptible voters in swing districts with this sort of idolatrous 'religiosity' Belin describes herein. When I've suggested to others I know that I quit, and neither look nor ever 'participate', I get looks of horror, and excuses, as though I'd suggested having the omnipresent tracking and surveillance devices be surgically removed from their hand. The 'smartphone' they paid for with their own money...

Pitch 'em in the woodchipper before it's too late.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know others realize what's going on. It's hard to comprehend that so many are going on with their lives like everything is normal and okay. We're losing so much. I'm so thankful for reporters like Laura. It's hard to accept what's happening, but I think it's better than sticking my head in the sand.

Wishing you Wellness. K:)

I’ve heard rantings like that at churches throughout my life. It happens when the “Bible study” is exclusively on the OLD TESTAMENT.

To be clear, Jesus is NOT in the Old Testament. But from all over, mostly in the Deep South, I’ve talked to neighbors and such who could work themselves into a tizzy in 3 seconds flat by quoting the Old Testament.

To be clear, none of that remotely resembles the teachings of Jesus Christ as outlined, quoted in red, in the New Testament. Apparently, those people don’t read that part while calling themselves Christian. 🤔

For the record, as an American, I don’t particularly care what other people believe. Their beliefs are their own business.

However, the U.S. Constitution and the LAWS of our country require us not to force our beliefs on others and to refrain from breaking laws in the name of religion.

Standing firm on that!

Religious fanaticism has dominated many of the hateful laws that come out of our legislature. Iowans need to vet their representatives better and vote accordingly. Especially since the majority of Iowans do not agree with many of their positions. Only the voters can stop these assaults on segments of our population.

I live in Nevada and use NuCara pharmacy. I saw Brett at our local CROP walk last October. After chatting for a bit I asked him where he went to church. He didn't say a denomination, just "Ames". We have a Catholic, Methodist, Lutheran, Disciples of Christ, Presbyterian, in town and a Jehovah's Witness just outside of town. I asked living and working in Nevada and as mayor wouldn't one of those fit his needs? He said he wasn't comfortable raising his family in any of those. I am a member of the Presbyterian, I guess we and the other churches are just churches of Satan?! I have recently attended a North Central Iowa Presbyter Meeting where we voted on and passed LGBQT inclusiveness amendments. I was proud of many area clergy for speaking out at Des Moines for the retention of LGBQT Civil Rights. But of course as tools of the Devil they had to be turned away!

Does he go to the Cornerstone Church in Ames?

Keith A Moyer's avatar

I don't know, I didn't follow up. A CROP walk raises money to help the needy with food security issues, not something I would expect from someone with extremist religious right views. Thanks for your digging around to bring the nasty underbelly to light. If he doesn't renounce these views, just an oopsie! won't do. But the seat has been Republican for awhile. He may survive but not if enough people now about this!

Barker's censoring of comments on his Facebook page may reveal a fear of doubt., something that all true believers fear most. They typically turn to both physical and intellectual isolation.

Thank you for this post Laura. Rather than a rookie mistake….seems more like an error in judgment. And Joni and Kim should have shame heaped on them for dispersing this stuff… but in order to feel shame one has to have a soul…and both have sold theirs for power!!

Who did Jesus exclude. Show me that is in the Bible. How tis this not "judgement" by the authors.

Re: "Iowa House Republican....weekly 'Bible Study', which portrays political adversaries as tools of Satan..."

According to Science, the earliest hominids (earliest bipedal primate mammals and future humans) came down from the trees approx. 6-7 million years ago-----Apparently, some Republican Party hominids, in the Iowa Legislature, have yet to get the--- "come-down-from-the-trees" memo.

From Science to History: In the 1600s, Europe and Salem, MA, believed in Witchcraft and Witches. It seems, also, that some Republican Party members of the Iowa Legislature---- didn't get another memo---- the "there-are-no-witches" memo, either!

The Republican Party, in the Iowa Legislature, has been shamed by the above, so-called "Bible Study" matters.

Iowa deserves a Better Iowa Legislature---A Democratic Party Iowa Legislature!

Hmmm. Barker is then barely ahead of Elon's 13 children by 4 women.

My mother was a moderate "Bob Ray" Republican in the late 1980's when the Iowa GOP let the first Jerry Falwell "Moral Majority" wing into the party. My mother defended the moderate views within the platform but got shouted down by Falwell's people for being a "secular humanist." What started then is entrenched dogma now and epitomized by Rep. Parker. My mother said she was never more proud to stand her ground against these extremists, but she she soon left the party that she said, left her.

Rookie Mistake.

More like total incompetence. It’s not as if he communicated the lunch menu.

They revealed information which would put service members in danger.

I’m sure people died during the attack. They are so glib and disingenuous. Moronic wannabes.

It seems like you are talking about Pete Hegseth and the group chat including the editor of the Atlantic. That was completely outrageous!

My post was about something unrelated that happened in the Iowa legislature last week.

So sorry, I don’t know how I got muddled up.

I am speechless. I hope to regain my voice momentarily. Meanwhile I am pondering powers of discernment of our legislators. This is truly horrifying.

Thank you, Laura. YOU obviously still have your voice.

As a veteran I cannot begin to express my disappointment in Joni Ernst. I now have another reason to do all I can to work against her re-election. Face Book posts by Religious Right Wing evangelicals should always prompt us to be suspicious of any religious group who spends more time telling you who to hate than who to love.

Little traitor Joanie…I mean Phony had nothing to say? She and what-day-of- the-week-is-it Grassley are perfect to represent the nitwits of Iowa.

As a rule, evangelicals are known for not reading either pro of con sources on any said (especially religious) subject. Case in point, studies show that evangelicals, although they "cry" literal biblical interpretation, are themselves woefully ignorant of the literal content of the bible and as a result even more clueless of any theological nuances that might tone down their persistent rhetoric, per a 2006 investigation. https://www.alternet.org/2006/12/the_christian_right_goes_back_to_bible_boot_camp
