Iowa is red and Iowa is now tribal. The state will likely never see another elected like Miller or Fitzgerald who routinely wins year after year no matter which party wins for Governor.
Partisanship has increased across the country. After the 2018 election I read that Iowa was among only a handful of states that have at least two statewide elected officials from each party. (Obviously that won't be true anymore, even if Rob Sand hangs on.)
I think something gets lost when that goes down - you get mediocrities like Bird elected. At least now Democrats know; I think there was always just a feeling that Miller and Fitzgerald could win for as long as they wanted to run, even in Republican years. But you take the world as you find it so it won't be a surprise in the future.
