Would this type of journalism exist under the Fairness Doctrine as proposed by various House members and encourage by such notables as Sen Harkin?

The Register USED to be one of the most respected sources of information. This finding makes me sad and mad but I am not surprised. Very sad and hurtful. Truth matters.

Upon further review. . . .

Laura's coverage of Gannett's role in printing (is that different from "publishing"?) these paper rags is just the tip of the iceberg. The current 1,200 (and growing) discrete publications, gathered under one conservative roof, date back to 2012 as online entities (google "Brian Timpone") and include numerous publications situated in Iowa (google "Metric Media Iowa") including one for Des Moines (google "Des Moines Sun"). Quite a revelation for this naive Iowa boy.

Even further review. . . .

The Timpone enterprise is open about its purpose (google "LGIS.CO") for its mission statement and some representative articles. And if "all politics is local" they have taken it to heart and absolutely mastered the concept--every publication contains much information pertinent to that venue while emphasizing the conservative side of multiple local issues.

Finally, funding for this massive operation, even with their logarithms and software, must be formidable and in the absence of any evidence of paid commercial advertising clearly comes from significant donations/donors.

This young Iowa lad is becoming a bit jaded and retracts his appurtenant comment regarding limited "appeal" of these publications (but still feel we must husband our limited umbrage for larger issues).

Thank you, Laura, for airing all this and promoting an "informed, skeptical approach" to information sources. Now, about financial literacy. . . . .

Just as even the most egregious defendant has a right to a defense attorney even the most outlying opinion has a right to be expressed. And the product is so clearly prejudiced it is hard to imagine it will appeal to any other than those already believing--cannot imagine it changing many minds.

And Belin has it right--it is Gannett. The Register is no longer an independent publication and it's employed management, which is doing a great job on local matters, may have little to say in this regard; besides, such publications are an exercise of an under-used printing plant providing incremental jobs and income to central Iowa.

Surely there are more salient issues more deserving of everyone's limited supply of umbrage.

Somehow none of this is surprising anymore.

I remember when Trump started talking about ‘fake news’. I discounted it as a temporary Spiro Agnew type criticism of media. We failed at recognizing its power. Then mix in Trump movement supporters, with assistance by Gannett now, turning the tables on critics, by using Fake News to support their efforts. It reminds me how trump successfully created a culture that democracy was under attack, when his movement itself were the aggressors. No wonder people all over the political map and world lose trust in the news/media and their minds become muddled by threats of loss of democracy.
