Thank you for all of your good work doing deep dives on what has happened in the Iowa Legislature this year. They have done a whole lot of damage to people who have no voice in this state. To me, one of the worst decisions the governor and this legislature made is the failure to use federal funds to continue the food assistance in the summer for students who use that assistance during the school year. That decision was nothing but mean.
Thank you. It's hard to understand because literally no one benefits from this decision. It's not like some of her choices which have winners and losers. The multiplier effect from food assistance is huge as well.
Kathi and Laura, thank you. If the Governor believed that Iowa children are different and better off than similar, lower-income Nebraska children, she should say so. She could argue that Iowa hunger programs are more comprehensive and reach more children than in Nebraska. Our governor could say we have reduced the number of students who need free and reduced lunches because of Iowa's improving economy for working class or lower-income Iowa families. She could say maybe Nebraska needs federal help, but not in Iowa. She just 'says no'.
It is also too bad that our Farm Bureau and commodity groups choose not to be involved at any level. At the federal level, I believe the National Farm Bureau does get involved with SNAP legislation..

It's too bad Republican legislators refuse to challenge her on this. They could pass one of these bills and override her veto.

The grocery stores also stopped lobbying on this issue, which is absurd. Almost all of these dollars would get spent in local grocery stores.
