I read this earlier. I THINK that obituaries are still free in my local paper. Not sure about a larger paper. I wrote my mother's obituary because i wrote everything from grants and articles for scientific journals to brochures written at the 5th grade level. I knew how to write and what I wanted to say. It was LONG. I wanted it in the Des Moines Register for at least 2 days. The funeral director told me how much it would cost and asked if I still wanted to do it. Yes, I did. I wanted people to know Mom's "pedigree"--that the descendants of her great-grandparents in the Irish community of Melrose were numerous, but many didn't know she was one of them. As the family genealogist, I know valuable the information in obituaries can be. So I did what a journalist might have done in the past.

Believe it or not, this resonates with me. I had charge of two small papers. So small I was also the graphic designer and publisher to the main big publisher and corporate head. If I was a machine, my systems were barely updated.
